Gold vs. Silver: Which Metal Should You Choose?

Back to Blog

At Alas Arum Silver & Gold Workshop, we are one of the few places in Bali that gives you the choice. Most workshops are "silver only." But we believe in offering the full spectrum of precious metals. So, the question is: are you a gold person or a silver person?

Choosing your metal isn't just about color preference. It affects the price, the durability of the piece, and even the difficulty of the class. Here is a breakdown to help you decide before you book.

1. The Look: Cool vs. Warm

This is the most obvious difference.

  • Silver is cool, understated, and versatile. It matches almost any outfit and looks great on all skin tones. It has a high reflectivity, making it the shiniest of all metals when polished.
  • Gold is warm, rich, and luxurious. It has been the symbol of wealth and status for millennia. 18k and 22k gold have a deep yellow luster that simply cannot be faked.

2. The Workability: How It Feels to Craft

For a beginner silversmith, the physical properties of the metal matter.

Silver (Sterling .925):
Silver is relatively soft and easy to manipulate. It anneals (softens) quickly and is forgiving if you make a mistake. It is the perfect learning metal.

Gold (18k or 22k):
Gold is denser and heavier. It feels different under the hammer—more solid. It also has a different melting point and soldering behavior. Working with gold requires a bit more precision with the torch because the stakes are higher (literally).

3. Durability and Care

Silver:
Silver oxidizes (tarnishes) over time, especially in humid climates or if exposed to sulfur (like in hot springs). However, it is easy to clean with a polishing cloth. It is durable enough for daily wear but can scratch.

Gold:
High-karat gold does not tarnish. It will stay bright yellow forever. It is also very dense, meaning it wears down slower than silver over decades. This makes it the superior choice for wedding bands or heirloom pieces meant to be passed down.

4. The Price Tag

This is the deciding factor for many.

  • Silver Class: Very affordable. The material cost is low, so the price of the workshop is mainly for the tuition and experience.
  • Gold Class: Significantly more expensive. Gold trades at a market price that is roughly 80-90 times higher than silver per gram. A heavy gold ring can cost several hundred dollars in materials alone.

Note: At Alas Arum, we weigh the gold before and after the class. You only pay for the exact gram weight of the gold you use in your final piece.

The Compromise: Gold Plating

Can't decide? You can have the best of both worlds. You can take the Silver Workshop, enjoy the lower stress and cost of working with silver, and then have us Gold Plate your finished piece.

We apply a thick layer of 18k Gold, Rose Gold, or White Gold over your silver ring. It looks exactly like solid gold but costs a fraction of the price. This is a very popular option for travelers who love the gold aesthetic but are on a budget.

Conclusion

If you are a first-timer just wanting a fun afternoon, Silver is the way to go. It's stress-free and classic.
If you are making a wedding band or a "forever piece" to mark a special milestone, splurge on Gold. The feeling of melting solid gold is an unforgettable luxury.
